In October 2011, rains caused mudslides and floods that killed 9 people. While we were visiting, you can still see that Vernazza and Monterosso are still rebuilding.
They were hit the hardest.
Hard to imagine the devastation that occurred. We had seen a photo and there was no harbour left in Vernazza....only mud where it once was.
But this is a photo taken on this visit in March 2019.
In a word.....gorgeous.
Our terrace near our hotel built into the side of the cliff.
You can see it half way down the side of the cliff.
We stayed at the Hotel Gianni Franz and would highly recommend it.
Funky rooms. Incredible views. Dinner in their restaurant at the harbours edge.
Fantastic.
Lillies everywhere growing wild.
Trudi found a wee quiet time spot near our terrace.
Nice view.
The Cinque Terres are century old villages. Vernazza has a population of less than 900.
Boats in the Piazza as the waves are quite huge tonight.
I love the colourful buildings, laundry hanging out, and the whole vibe of Vernazza.
Everything is aglow in the evening.
The Ligurian Sea calm for a moment.
But don't turn your back....
Everyone on the break wall got soaked after this wave hit.
The vibrant umbrellas of Vernazza.
The sun going down and projecting such a glorious golden glow on the Santa Margherita di Antiochia Church and Bell tower.
Three excellent Canadian gals watching the very big waves hitting the break wall and lighting up in the sunset.
There is a rope (you can barely see it in this photo) to keep tourists (everyone) from harms way.....those unpredictable waves.
But many cross....as you can see below.
That wave could easily take them out to sea.
Can't watch...except to take the photo.
A fantastic afternoon and evening......'Tomorrow is another day.'
