The present "Lanterna" lighthouse in Genoa was built in 1543. There has been a lighthouse on this spot for a millennia.
The rock on which it is built is 40 meters high.
A display below shows the steps....I was hoping Deb didn't see.....lol.
The light on the "Lanterna" can be seen for 50 kilometers.
Below are lighthouse lights on display.
We walk through the 'under belly' of this incredible monument for quite a while.
The total steps to the top are 365....but we can only go half way...172 steps. Still very high.
The elevator in the center is not available to visitors.....sad face.
All these incredible monuments and structures in Europe that were never meant for people to visit.....check out this opening to the observation platform. Only 25 people allowed at a time.
The view is worth the climb up.
The Port of Genoa.
Amazing city. Less than a million citizens.
Strategic location with a range of mountains in the background.
Along the ridge of those are Forts scattered around for defence back in the day.
This photo doesn't show how nervous I was. The wind gusts were 30 km.....we were really getting blown around up there.
Ferry boats in the harbour. A very busy port.
The tower and rock together total 117 meters above sea level. It is huge.
I love this photo with the jet lines in the blue sky.
Blooming.....
The tower is 77 meters high. You can climb to the first observation point half way up.
Still blooming....
That was an fantastic adventure.
Colours of the flowers are brilliant.
"What's coming next?"
Maybe a trip out of the city to another fishing village......
Nervi here we come.
