We are blessed to have a balcony that has a great view of an orchard of trees. Each day I see something special. Parakeets, Common Blackbird with an incredible song, and Eurasian Magpies.
A camera shy Eurasian Magpie. Beautiful blue feathers and long tail plumage.
Heading back down to the Old part of Genoa for some ceramics that I saw.....I know....but they were quite lovely.
A coffee would be great at this wee spot. So quaint.
A pot of gold in the window of a chocolate store.
Could be yours for a mere 40 euros or $60. Canadian dollars.....yikes.
Cafes pop up anywhere and everywhere.
A first glance I thought these were garbage cans, but to my surprise it's a kiosk.
Book sellers? Who would have guessed that?
Piazza Banchi with the Church of San Pietro.
Continuing on our left we were complete astounded to find that we were at the Porto Antico.
My wee friend....a Great Cormorant.
We enjoyed a great lunch on the top floor of this building that sits right in front of "BIGO."
I had stuffed anchovies...yummy.
Bigo is a panoramic lift that has great views of the city and it's harbour.
It lifts 40 feet in the air and rotates.
Piazza Caricamento, a very colourful, wide open, airy, piazza across from the Port of Genoa.
'Italy is a dream that keeps returning for the rest of your life.'
-Anna Akhmatova, Poet
This photo below depicts for me the slowing down of the hustle and bustle that is North American mentality. Sipping drinks in a cafe. Wandering the streets and being grateful for the sunshine.
Being happy to be alive.
"Can someone get this pigeon off my head?"
The home of Christopher Columbus was quite difficult for us to find. We can see the incredible 14th century walls with the majestic Porto Soprana medievil towers. They are also called Sant'Andrea Towers. But where is Casa Columbus?
All that remains of a monastery that was located here, is this beautiful Roman styled 12th century cloister. It is actually used by the public. Couples snuggling or people just hanging out.
The Porta Soprana was built in 1161. Porta meaning gate, which this is one of three of medieval city of Genoa.
There is an inscription on the outer walls that reads,
"I am guarded by soldiers, surrounded by beautiful walls, and with my value, I cast away the darts of the enemies. If you bring peace, you may approach this gate; if you seek war, you shall return sad and beaten."
I know where Elvis is....at this cafe in Genoa singing his songs.....
Mystery solved when we got home and checked our maps.
We walked past Christopher Columbus's house twice??? Really.
Never saw it and spent much time looking?
Lol.
We will be back to check it out....because the market is right around the corner.
