Cinque Terre, The Five Villages

Genoa is so handy to everywhere.
Rome is south about 5 hrs direct via train.
Cinque Terre is only about 1-1.5 hrs by train south of Genoa.
Venice is a 4 hr direct train heading east.
While Milan is about 1-1.5 hrs north via the train.

Today we were going to Cinque Terre overnight.
Starting from the south, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare, Italy.

The Cinque Terres from Riomaggiore. (below)

Sunrise, facing towards Riomaggiore from Vernazza.

All the Cinque Terres from the beach at Monterosso.

Riomaggiore is the first of the Cinque Terre villages we are visiting.
Cinque Terre is documented as early as the 11th Century.
A very common sight in these villages are the fishing boats lining the streets.

Deb enjoying the walk along the village harbour.

Very rugged and steep mountains behind, with the villages clinging to the sea edge.
Grapes and olives are grown here on the mountains in terraced growing space.

Favourite travelling partner ever....Deb.

Great idea for growing herbs.

Riomaggiore, Italy (below)
Gorgeous.

Heading to Manarola (below) which is the next village via a 5 minute train ride.
Because of the difficult terrane, the only way to visit is either train, paths, or boat.

Very colourful houses.

The umbrellas of a terrace restaurant, with incredible views of the sea.

Fresh sea air....sun....friends....partner....what more could you ask for?

Part of the sea side path that at this time is technically closed all the way through the five villages.
So we took the train.

Gail and Trudi enjoying Cinque Terre.

Manarola, Italy (below)
Stunning.

The only village we made a quick stop at but didn't stay is Corniglia. (below)
It is the only village not to be on the sea.  You can either walk from the sea (train station) or take a shuttle bus to the top of the town.

And zoomed in.

Back on the train and heading to Vernazza.
That was a fantastic day...we are all tired.
We are staying there for the night.
