My new favourite drink. Caffe d'orzo (barley in Italian). Made with barley, it is caffeine free. Tastes like coffee and looks like coffee.
In Italy, they have 12 barley roasting companies producing this. It is sweeping Europe.....but slowly outside of Italy.
It can be made, like the Italians do, in a Moka Pot (below), Expresso machine, or coffee maker.
Or as we have found, an instant version that we add boiling water to ( the photo above).
Delicious.
This isn't a new drink. During World War II, coffee was very expensive and rare to find. They began making this hot drink with roasted barley, and chicory, as an alternative.
I looked online and it is available on the Amazon.ca website....in case you want to try.
Yesterday Deb and I found a wee little cafe that makes a delicious Cappuccino D'Orzo.
