Mercato Orientale Market in Genoa

Arriving on a Friday...and everyone knows that Saturday is Market Day....we gotta go even though we are a bit tired from travelling.  But this is not to be missed.

The Mercato Orientale Market.
Opened in 1899.  It has over 5500 square feet of shopping space.....oh my gosh....I can't wait.

Where the bus dropped us off and where the market is....lol....was about a 10 minute walk.  But it was so cool.  Florists selling to the locals.  Music echoing from the street musicians.
Watching everyone bustle around on this beautiful Saturday morning.

What struck me first is the colours.  Huge displays of different fruit and veggies Canada can only dream of having, at this time of year, and very fresh.
From this vendor...a lovely woman, I purchased a different type of lettuce for salads I wanted to try and also a red lettuce.  The lettuce was flat and round and the size of a large dinner plate.  It will feed us four (big) meals!

Sun-dried tomatoes....I purchased 1/4 of a kilo for about 3 euros.
There is a difference in prices.  The more expensive price is the naturally sun-dried.  The cheaper tomatoes have been machine dried....not for me.  Go with the nature.
Soaking them either is warm water for 30 minutes, or olive oil for 24 hours, before you use them.
They are so good.

Fresh basil....actually still in dirt.  I am going to add it to our Caprese Salad.
Cherry tomatoes to die for...so juicy and flavourful.

Deb wants to buy one of these gigantic chunks of Parmigiano cheese...yikes.
We did get a small block which was affordable and fresh.  We have been putting it on everything.

The colours!!!

Fresh peppers and sage just hanging around.

Sorry little squid....not today.

Cherry tomatoes and peppers enticing customers to pick them.  Don't do it.

We actually didn't buy anything from this fellow.  He sells tripe....first or second stomach of a cow?  Not sure...might try it out at a restaurant....not sure.

Flat bread...homemade....two types we got.  One quite spicy...and the other had olives in it.
These are paper thin.  Six huge squares for only a few euros.

Monster bowl of....you guessed it....Pesto.

I purchased pesto and Trofie pasta noodles from the shop below.
The two together are a perfect combination.

That was so fun...I am so going back next Saturday.
