I may at this point sound like a broken record....but the hiking, climbing and ascending required in this area is essential to exploring.
The third church in this complex is another 300 meters, via steps, up higher on the mountain.
The trick we have found is to take your time. Enjoy and breathe in the air, the forest, and the beauty of the surroundings along the paths.
Remembering it is not all about the destination...it is the journey too.
What a great way to catch these amazing views.
Sometimes the ascent is quite steep, but if you are luck, there might be a rail to help.
We are almost there.....
The reward of perseverance.....a spectacular view of the other churches, Savina Monastery Complex, and the Boka Bay which is the gate way to the other villages along this 64 kilometer stretch of sea, heading towards the Bay of Kotor....but that's another adventure.
A lovely quaint church surrounded by a small cemetery is Saint Sava's.
Built in the 13th century by the Saint of the same name.
A wee welcome doggie came to see us at the cemetery.
The wee doggie's owner is here today maintaining her family's resting spot.
Deb and I were getting ready to continue our journey when the caretaker of this church motioned and called us over. He didn't speak any english but it was clear he wanted us to visit inside the church. Didn't have to ask us twice. It was locked when we arrived.
He was so lovely and friendly. Shook our hands and smiled and made us feel so welcomed. The church itself was probably no more than 20 by 30 feet. Tiny to be sure.
The frescos inside were very well preserved.
Such a special act of kindness....as he was working in the cemetery and dropped everything to take care of us.
One more peek at Saint Sava's Church and cemetery as we leave this peaceful place.
We continue our hike, not wanting to go back down all those stairs, we have 'faith' that if we follow the road we might just find our way home.
Stay tuned.....
