This is a map of where we are, Herceg Novi and the destination: Kotor. It is across the water however our bus travels all around the bay at the foot of this mountain range. In the summer months there are ferries but not in the off season.
Our arrival in Kotor coincides with the Saturday Farmers Market day. It is only about an hour bus trip from Herceg Novi and costs 3 euros one way!!!
The road around the Gulf of Kotor, to get here, is at the base of a stunning mountain range.
The tastes of Turkish delights below reminds me that the Turks occupied this area for 400 years. Which means there are many cultural influences in the food and desserts.
Turkish, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Serbian, Croatian....and more.
Kotor has a population of about 13,500 people. Lots of them were at the market today.
This woman is purchasing homemade cheese (the round white cheese on the blue crate), the entire round of it. The cost is less than 7 euros.
So many to choose from. Looking for a few items to take with us up the mountain for our lunch.
Oh ya....I said up the mountain.
1300 plus steps up to the very top. It is THE thing to do here....for tourists.
This gentleman is slicing smoked pork right off the leg. My favourite meat ever. Prosciutto back home is very similar.
This woman was so friendly and lovely. She let us taste test three of her cheeses. We have no idea what kind of cheese it is...that we bought (half of a round), but it is soft, tasty, and mild. Could be goats cheese or cows cheese? So good.
The Farmers Market is set up Saturday's tucked in between the medieval wall that surrounds the Old Town, and the brilliant sea harbour on the other side of these lush palm trees.
The fortifications (wall) was built during the Venetian period. Thus there are also Ancient Roman influences seen in the buildings in the Old Town.
So much to try, buy and photograph....can't tell we are tourists.....lol.
So we have water, cheese, meat and sweets...all we need to do is find the wall.
